16-year-old charged in stolen car crash that killed 3, injured 6 in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –  Three people were killed and six others were injured after police said a 16-year-old driving a stolen car allegedly tried to escape officers, ran a red light and caused a five-car pileup in Hickory Hill on Tuesday night, police said.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers had tried to pull over the teen before the wreck. MPD said the car the teen was driving was stolen from the Shadowbrook Apartments on Monday, August 19. According to MPD, the 16-year-old and another suspect used rifles and handguns to rob a man of his black Chrysler 300.

Police said that officers attempted the traffic stop just before 9:50 p.m. near Getwell Road and Cottonwood Tuesday night but the teen kept going. Officers lost the vehicle but it was later found near Kirby Parkway and East Raines Road, MPD said.

MPD said the teen ran a red light and caused a five-vehicle crash.

Two women were killed in the wreck, while another woman was rushed to the hospital and later died, police said. The teen driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. According to MPD, two of the women who died were 26 and another was 47. A 2-year-old girl was also injured. Police initially took that girl to the hospital in non-critical condition, but the girl’s family told FOX13 on Wednesday that she was listed in critical condition.

Family members said that the women who died were 26-year-old Shekila Sively, 47-year-old Patrice Hughes and 26-year-old Dantrice Stanback.

That 16-year-old driver has been charged with aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle and having prohibited weapons, namely a machine gun.

MPD said no officers were injured.
