LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey along with Mayor Craig Greenberg provided an update on the police shooting in the Smoketown neighborhood that left two officers injured on Nov. 19.
Humphrey released the names of the officers involved, identifying them as Officer Laxman Acharya and Officer Brendan Koerner. Both officers are positioned in LMPD’s Fourth Division.
Acharya has been on the force for three years, and Koerner for six. Police said the officers were shot around 8 p.m. after they had stopped a stolen car with several people inside on Roseland Street.
The arrest citation said 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson was driving the car, but he resisted arrest and officers took him to the ground.
During the struggle, police said a gun went off and hit Thompson’s torso and right arm. The bullets struck Koerner in the right hand and hit Acharya in the knee. Acharya was released from the hospital later night.
Koerner underwent surgery on his hand and is expected to be released.
“Very proud of these officers,” Humphrey said. “There was another officer out there with them doing proactive work that’s exactly what this community needs. We need officers who are going to go out there and do the hard work that it takes to keep this community safe, and we’re very proud of that type of work and all the other officers who are doing that on a day in and day out and night in and night out basis.”
