Montgomery County deputy fatally shoots man who struck him with piece of wood

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Maryland — A Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot and killed a man who struck him with a piece of wood Saturday morning, video shows.

The incident started at around 8am Saturday. Montgomery County police received numerous 911 calls that a man in a Volkswagen sedan was driving erratically.

The driver, identified as 52-year-old Kevin Costlow, of Laytonsville, forced one vehicle to swerve into a telephone pole.

Costlow then crashed into another vehicle and continued driving the wrong way down MD-108, authorities said.

Costlow’s car broke down after the crash. He then got out with “a large wooden stick of some sort” and approached the people in the other car, said Sheriff Darren Popkin.

A Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy who was nearby stopped and engaged Costlow.

Eyewitness video shows Costlow bending over and picking up what appears to be a tree branch, and striking the deputy with it around the head and neck.

The deputy attempted to deploy his Taser but in vain, according to Popkin. The deputy then opened fire on Costlow, he said.

Kevin Costlow was pronounced dead at the scene, and the deputy was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Montgomery County Police are handling the investigation.

The deputy will be placed on administrative leave once he’s released from the hospital while the investigation continues.
