22 killed after military plane loaded with cash crashes in Bolivia: graphic video
LA PAZ, Bolivia — A military plane carrying newly printed banknotes crashed near the capital, killing at least 22 people as graphic video from the scene shows victims, wreckage, and cash scattered across the ground.
The aircraft went down near El Alto after reportedly veering off the runway, slamming into vehicles and a nearby area, leaving bodies, debris, and damaged cars spread across the scene.
Authorities said 29 people were injured, many of them passengers in public transportation vehicles that were struck during the crash. Among the dead were men, women, and children, along with at least one crew member.
The plane, identified as a Hercules C-130 operated by the Bolivian air force, was transporting newly printed currency from Santa Cruz to La Paz.
More than 500 soldiers and 100 police officers were deployed to secure the area and prevent looting. Officials later destroyed cash containers at the site, stating the bills held no legal value as they had not yet entered circulation.
Emergency crews extinguished flames engulfing the aircraft while forensic teams continued recovering remains.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
