3 killed, including 8-month-old baby, in shooting at WestFest carnival in Utah

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT — Authorities are investigating a tragic mass shooting that occurred at the WestFest arts-and-culture carnival on Sunday night.

The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. near a police command post, when a heated altercation between two teen groups escalated and a 16-year-old pulled a handgun and began firing.

Three individuals were killed:

  • Hassan Lugundi, 18, involved in the dispute
  • Fnu Reena, 41, an uninvolved bystander from West Jordan
  • An unnamed 8-month-old baby caught in the crossfire

Two teens (a 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy) suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and a pregnant woman was injured while fleeing.

Police engaged the suspect, discharging a shot but failing to hit him, before swiftly apprehending the teen shooter.

Officials confirmed the suspect, held in juvenile detention, faces three homicide charges. Investigators are determining whether the violence was gang-related and are urging witnesses to come forward.
