MEXICO CITY — At least four people are dead and 90 injured after a gas truck overturned and exploded Wednesday afternoon in the Iztapalapa area of Mexico City.
Officials said the tanker, which was carrying nearly 50,000 liters of gas, tipped over near the Puente de la Concordia before igniting. The resulting blast sent a shock wave through the area, damaging dozens of vehicles and setting off a large emergency response.
Videos posted online showed giant flames and thick smoke pouring into the sky as residents ran from the scene. Firefighters and emergency crews worked for hours to cool the tanker and contain leaking gas to prevent additional explosions.
City officials said most of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with several in serious condition. Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed the deaths and said forensic teams were on site collecting evidence to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation to establish who is responsible and whether the company operating the tanker complied with safety and insurance requirements. The driver survived and is hospitalized under police watch.
