BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Police Department has released body camera footage from a deadly officer-involved shooting from earlier this month.
The shooting, which occurred on May 12, left 26-year-old Jai Marc Howell dead, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
Police have identified the officers involved as Detective Enger Jimenez, a 4-year veteran of the department, Detective Steven Foster, an 11-year veteran, and Detective Tony Tiburzi, a 5-year veteran.
On May 12 around 1:25 p.m., officers began an investigation into a police-involved shooting in the 4600 block of York Road.
Officials say Baltimore Police officers encountered Howell in the area, and when they approached him, Howell began running away.
Authorities say three officers gave chase, and another began chasing Howell in a vehicle.
During the chase, police say that Howell displayed a gun, and when police gave him verbal commands, officials say Howell did not comply.
Then, officials say an exchange of gunfire took place, leaving Howell wounded.
Police say they rendered emergency medical aid on the scene, and Howell was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A semiautomatic gun with an extended magazine was recovered near Howell.
No officers were injured in the shooting.
Officials said officers on the scene were equipped with body cameras that recorded the shooting, and that footage was released on Thursday.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley and Deputy Commissioner Brian Nadeau of the Resources and Accountability Bureau spoke at a press conference upon the video’s release.
“The officers were in the area doing proactive enforcement because the 4600 block [of York Road] is an area well known for drug activity, and it’s been an area that has seen some recent violence,” Worley said Thursday.
Worley revealed that Howell was wanted on an attempted murder warrant out of Baltimore County.
