AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department has released bodycam footage from the September 10 officer-involved shooting near Zilker Park that left a woman brain-dead and an officer wounded.
According to APD, officers were checking a reported stolen vehicle in the early morning hours when they encountered 30-year-old Brandon Thompson and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Kay Smith, near Azie Morton Road. As officers gave commands, Thompson allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire, striking Smith in the head and Officer Adam Reinhart in the abdomen. Officer Reinhart returned fire while Thompson fled into a wooded area.
Smith was transported to a local hospital after being shot. Police have not released an official update on her condition, but according to an arrest warrant, a nurse at Dell Seton Medical Center declared her “brain dead” Wednesday afternoon and described her injuries as “non-compatible with life.”
Officer Reinhart survived his injuries and is recovering at home.
Authorities say Thompson triggered an hours-long manhunt across South Austin. At one point, Barton Hills Elementary went into lockdown as officers searched nearby. Around 7:52 a.m., Thompson reportedly broke into a home on Homedale Drive, where the homeowner shot him in the arm and leg. He was later hospitalized and is now in stable condition.
Thompson has been charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer and burglary of a residence. Police recovered the handgun used in the shooting.
Officer Reinhart, a six-year APD veteran, is on administrative leave per department policy.
