Baltimore officer indicted on attempted murder charge after alleged cruiser attack
A Baltimore police officer has been indicted after a viral video showed him using his patrol car to chase down a man in the Park Heights neighborhood, authorities announced Wednesday.
Officer Robert A. Parks, who joined the department in 2020, is now facing charges including second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless driving, and misconduct in office. Prosecutors say he could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted on all counts. He was suspended without pay and later turned himself in.
The incident happened on Oct. 28. According to the indictment, Parks drove up to a store on Wylie Avenue and told a group of people standing outside to “take a lap.” When they started walking away, Parks allegedly followed one individual, called him by name, and motioned for him to come over. When the man refused and walked off, Parks got on the radio reporting, “I have one running.”
Video shows Parks aggressively pursuing the man in a marked cruiser, driving onto a driveway and grassy area as the man tried to escape. Prosecutors say Parks struck the man with the vehicle before continuing to chase him through an alley and into a backyard. The man eventually jumped a fence and escaped.
Baltimore officials condemned the officer’s actions.
“This was unacceptable and completely at odds with how we expect our public servants to act,” Mayor Brandon Scott said. Police Commissioner Richard Worley called the footage “alarming” and said it violated department policy, including the prohibition on using a vehicle as a weapon.
The State’s Attorney’s Office said it has instructed prosecutors to avoid using Parks as a witness while the investigation continues.
