COVINGTON, Ky. — New body camera video released shows the moments leading up to a shooting involving police in Covington.
It happened on March 14 at the Cambridge Square Apartments off Taylor Mill Road in Covington.
Covington police said officers responded to the complex for a call of a burglary in progress with a suspect armed with a knife, beating on the door of an apartment.
Officers encountered the suspect outside the apartment building while he was still holding the knife.
Authorities said the suspect came at officers, leading to Covington police firing shots at the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Charles Neace.
Neace was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
Speaking on Thursday, Kenton County commonwealth attorney Rob Sanders said there was a total of 12 shots fired, with Neace being struck by an estimated nine shots. Sanders said Neace was about 12-20 feet from police when the shooting occurred.
Sanders said the two officers involved were justified in their actions during the shooting.
