Body camera video released after Franklin County Sheriff SWAT officers shoot wanted man

The Franklin County Sheriff’s office released body camera video after SWAT officers shot a man last week who was wanted for a string of charges.

Authorities say SWAT officers were responding to a construction site in Gahanna on October 30 and approached 32-year-old Alexander Tolber, who had several active arrest warrants in Franklin and Fairfield counties. Officers had come to the construction site after receiving information Tobler was at the location.

Deputies said they notified Tobler they had warrants for his arrest. The suspect tried to back away, pulling out a gun and pointing it at officers, and deputies opened fire, striking him.

“It appears there may have been three that discharged their weapons; how many hit Mr. Tobler? That I don’t know,” Chief Deputy Rick Minerd Jr. with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The open warrants against Tobler include fleeing an officer in a vehicle, menacing by stalking, obstructing official business, and criminal trespassing, as well as a misdemeanor assault charge in Fairfield County. Additional charges could be filed.

Tobler was given medical treatment immediately after the shooting. He is now recovering at Mount Carmel East.

“The same guy that goes to shoot you, you shoot him and save his life by rendering him aid,”Fraternal Order Of Police Capital City Lodge 9 President Brian Steel. said. “It’s outstanding professionalism.”

Ohio’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is in charge of the investigation into the incident.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own investigation after receiving a final report from BCI, which could take several months.

“We always try to find out if our tactics were appropriate if we can improve, no matter what,” Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said.

The officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave.
