BODYCAM: Chicago Police chase ends in deadly gunfight into Indiana

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released body‑worn camera footage showing Chicago officers fatally shooting a suspect during a gunfire exchange in Hammond, Indiana.

On May 8, CPD responded to a report of an armed man on Chicago’s Far Southeast Side. The suspect, wanted for aggravated battery, fled in a vehicle during a traffic stop. 

Officers pursued him across the state line into Hammond.

After crashing near Dearborn and Gostlin streets, the suspect exited the vehicle and allegedly fired at officers. Two Chicago officers returned fire, fatally wounding him.

The suspect was identified as 50‑year‑old Joseph Navarro. He was taken to St. Catherine Hospital, where he later died.

No other individuals were hurt; a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The involved officers were uninjured and are under investigation. They’ve been reassigned per department policy.
