Bodycam credited with saving Volusia deputy during Deltona shootout

FLORIDA — Body camera footage shows the moment a Volusia County deputy was shot during a confrontation in Deltona, with the device on his chest credited with deflecting a bullet that could have been fatal.

The shooting happened Monday night as deputies responded to a call involving property damage at a home. When deputies approached the front door, the suspect allegedly opened fire immediately, sending multiple rounds toward them.

Deputy Jose Rivera was struck in the leg and shoulder during the gunfire. Authorities say the bullet that hit his shoulder is believed to have ricocheted off his body-worn camera, preventing it from striking his chest.

Footage from the scene shows deputies rushing to help Rivera, applying a tourniquet before placing him in a patrol vehicle and transporting him to the hospital.

The suspect, identified as Luis Diaz Polanco, was taken into custody shortly afterward. According to investigators, Polanco later admitted he intentionally fired at the deputies when they approached the home.

Authorities said Polanco told detectives he aimed at the officers’ chests because he believed their ballistic vests would protect them.

Polanco also told investigators he had been off his prescribed schizophrenia medication for about a month before the shooting.

He now faces two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm. Rivera survived the shooting and was released from the hospital days later.
