Bodycam shows fatal police shooting of man armed with knife during crisis call in Hartford
HARTFORD, Connecticut — Authorities have released body camera footage and new details following a fatal police shooting during a mental health response inside an apartment last week.
The incident happened Feb. 19 at an apartment building on Capitol Avenue, where officers responded alongside mental health professionals after a family member reported that 53-year-old Everard Walker was experiencing a crisis.
According to investigators, officers and clinicians attempted to communicate with Walker from the hallway before briefly entering and then retreating over concerns he might throw boiling water. Nearly an hour later, officers reentered as Walker tried to shut the door while being restrained by his son.
A physical struggle broke out involving Walker, his children, and responding officers. During the altercation, Walker was seen holding a knife and ignored repeated commands to drop it, according to the preliminary report.
Authorities say Walker appeared to move toward an officer who had fallen backward, prompting another officer to open fire. Walker was struck multiple times and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The encounter was captured on multiple body-worn cameras, as well as a separate recording taken by Walker’s daughter inside the apartment.
An autopsy ruled the death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds. Officials have not yet determined whether the use of force was justified as the investigation remains ongoing.
