Bodycam shows Houston officer fatally shoot man wielding bat and concrete

Houston police have released body camera footage showing the fatal shooting of a 64-year-old man in the Spring Branch neighborhood, after he allegedly threatened officers with a baseball bat and a chunk of concrete.

The incident occurred on May 23 around 3:40 p.m., when officers responded to a disturbance call from a strip center security guard who reported being attacked by the man earlier that day.

When officers located the suspect nearby, he reportedly became confrontational and swung a bat at them. Officers issued multiple commands — in both English and Spanish — which the man ignored.

According to police, tasers were deployed several times but had no effect. As the man continued advancing toward the officers while holding a bat and a piece of concrete, Officer K. Gideon opened fire, striking the man.

Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Officer Gideon, a member of the department since October 2022, was not injured and has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The case is under review by HPD’s Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The video was released as part of the department’s ongoing commitment to transparency.
