Bodycam video released of Hartford police shooting involving suicidal man with knife
CONNECTICUT — Newly released body camera footage shows the moment a suicidal man armed with a knife was shot by Hartford police, offering a clearer look at the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting.
The video captures officers responding to a call about a man in crisis, later identified as 55-year-old Steven Jones. He is seen holding a large knife while standing in the street as officers repeatedly order him to drop it.
Footage shows officers attempting to de-escalate the situation for several minutes. A taser was deployed but failed to stop Jones as he continued moving toward police.
Moments later, Officer Joseph Magnano arrives on scene. Within seconds of exiting his cruiser, he begins shouting commands for Jones to drop the knife.
As Jones continues advancing, Magnano fires nine shots, striking him and bringing him to the ground. Screams can be heard from nearby witnesses as the shooting unfolds.
Jones was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The release of the footage comes as the Connecticut Office of Inspector General continues to investigate the shooting. All officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
