Buffalo man fatally shot after lunging at Cheektowaga officers with knife

BUFFALO, NY. — Police have released body camera video of an August 13 shooting in Buffalo where officers fatally shot a 60-year-old man armed with a knife.

According to Cheektowaga police, officers had been searching for Hugh Davis Jr., who was wanted for assault, criminal mischief, and menacing after an incident two days earlier at the Fairfield Inn on Genesee Street that left a hotel employee unconscious.

Officers located Davis at his Sanders Road apartment in Buffalo. Bodycam footage shows him in the doorway holding a large knife before lunging at officers. Police said Davis swung the knife twice before an officer fired three shots, striking him.

Officers immediately called for an ambulance and began life-saving measures, but Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The shooting is under investigation by the Buffalo Police Department and the New York Attorney General’s Office. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave.
