OREGON — A carjacking suspect was shot dead by police on Interstate 5 in North Portland Monday.
The officer-involved shooting took place following a call at around 9:30am for a home invasion in which the suspect stole a vehicle. While responding to the call, police received several reports of carjackings in the area, authorities said.
Police say the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Brandon L. Keck, ditched the first vehicle and then forced passengers out of a second car at gunpoint.
Authorities located Keck at around 10am and began following him as he drove the wrong direction onto I-5 South near Rosa Parks Way.
At one point, Keck crashed and got out of the stolen car and attempted yet another carjacking at gunpoint on the freeway. Keck then allegedly shot and injured a woman inside the car, according to a press release Monday.
Officer John Hughes, who has been with the bureau for 17 years, then shot and killed Keck, police said.
But on Wednesday, officials said the woman was not hit by gunfire — and are working to figure out how she was injured.
Hughes has been placed on paid administrative leave and will be interviewed within 48 hours of the shooting, as per PPB protocol.
An investigation is ongoing.
