On May 5, 2025, Chicago police officers fatally shot 47-year-old Alfonzo Wright inside his apartment at the Grand Regency of Jackson Park assisted living facility in the Grand Crossing neighborhood.
Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a knife threatening residents.
Upon arrival, they attempted to de-escalate the situation and deployed Tasers, but Wright allegedly charged at them with a knife, prompting officers to open fire. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later, another resident, 58-year-old Keith Harding, was found dead in his apartment with stab wounds; police believe Wright was responsible for Harding’s death.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has released body-worn camera footage and other materials related to the incident.
