Dashcam shows fatal crash involving LMPD officer who sped without lights or sirens

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) has released new video showing the moments before a fatal crash involving an officer on April 2.

According to police, Officer Alyssa Begel was speeding on Fern Valley Road to assist with an emergency request for help from EMS crews just before 9 p.m. when she crashed into another vehicle.

Dashcam video from inside Begel’s cruiser shows the officer weaving in and out of lanes of traffic to avoid other drivers and barreling through intersections, all without her emergency lights or sirens on.

The driver of the other vehicle, 61-year-old Charles Briscoe, died at the scene. 

Begel suffered serious injuries, but was released from the hospital several days after the crash, LMPD said.

Begel has since been placed on paid administrative leave while LMPD has opened administrative and criminal investigations into the crash.

“Once completed, we will turn the findings over to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and recommendations,” police said. 

Begel was hired at LMPD in October 2022. She has received nearly two dozen letters of commendation for her work, but has also received three letters of reprimand.

One of those reprimands was for an accident back in October 2023, which Begel was found at fault for. Details about the accident are unknown, however LMPD documents show she received an “oral reprimand.”
