WOOSTER, Ohio – Newly released video showed the moment a suspect opened fire on a Wooster police officer this week.
This is dash camera video as Wooster police tried to pull a vehicle over for a stolen license plate Wednesday.
It was on Geyers-Chapel Road, just south of Back Orrville Road, that an officer attempted to stop the vehicle.
Dash camera video showed the suspect stop the vehicle, get out and open fire.
Police said the officer fired back, but the suspect jumped back in the Honda and took off.
Bodycam footage showed the officer couldn’t pursue the suspect because his cruiser was damaged by gunfire.
Video from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department showed their officers find the vehicle, leading to a second chase.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol joined in the pursuit.
During which, investigators said the suspect fired multiple shots at law enforcement. No officers returned fire.
The suspect led the pursuit into Wooster, where state troopers eventually crashed with the Honda on the Dix Expressway exit.
The suspect, who still hasn’t been identified, was taken into custody and later flown to Akron General Hospital with life-threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.
No officers were injured.
