Deer attacked by dog in Banff National Park, Canada

A video showing a violent encounter between a dog and a deer in Banff National Park has raised concerns about pet control in the wildlife-protected area.

The 39-second video shows a dog gripping what appears to be the deer’s antler in its mouth while a woman frantically attempts to separate the dog from the wild animal.

The incident appears to have taken place outside the Moxy Banff hotel in the 500 block of Banff Avenue.

Parks Canada has confirmed it is investigating the incident, which it says took place Feb. 18.

In a statement, Parks Canada reminded residents and visitors of the importance of keeping pets leashed at all times.

“This serves as an important reminder . . . to always keep dogs on a leash, under physical control at all times, and ensure that the animal does not chase, harass, bite or injure any person, other domestic animals or wildlife,” the statement reads.

Parks Canada said proper leashing keeps pets safe, along with the wildlife that call the national park home.

“Off-leash dogs can provoke defensive behaviour from animals like bears, elk and deer or unintentionally harm smaller species,” Parks Canada said.

“By keeping pets leashed, we help ensure the safety of both wildlife and our furry companions.”
