Deputy injured, man killed in Chautauqua shootout: bodycam

MINA, N.Y. — The New York Attorney General’s Office has released body camera footage of a June 18 shooting in Chautauqua County that left one man dead and a sheriff’s deputy injured.

Deputies responded to a domestic incident on Mina French Creek Road and encountered 56-year-old Mark Bemis outside a garage, armed with a shotgun. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Bemis refused. After a tense four-minute standoff, gunfire was exchanged.

Bemis was shot and died at the scene. A deputy was struck in the hand and remains out of work recovering from his injuries, with a projected return no earlier than October.
