Deputy kills armed man after being shot at during Niles Township traffic stop

NILES TOWNSHIP, MI — Video released shows a Berrien County Sheriff deputy fatally shoot a 48-year-old man after the man reportedly fired his gun at the officer during a traffic stop in Niles Township.

According to police, the incident occurred on June 30 when a deputy approached a parked vehicle on Third Street, just south of Fort Street.

Body camera footage shows Deputy Cal Landon approaching 48-year-old Joshua Coffey of South Bend and a woman for trespassing on private property.

When asked for identification, Coffey says it might be inside the parked vehicle. As he walks toward the car, he suddenly takes off running.

Video shows Landon pursue Coffey while holding a Taser. The chase leads them to a nearby park area, where Coffey stops, raises his left hand, and keeps his right hand lowered.

Despite repeated commands to show both hands and get on the ground, Coffey drops to one knee, pulls out a gun and fires at least two shots at the deputy.

Deputy Landon immediately switches from his Taser to his firearm and returns fire, fatally striking Coffey, the footage shows.

Landon was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
