Drone video shows 72-year-old man killed by police after pointing gun at officers
LA SALLE, Ill. — A 72-year-old man was shot and killed by police after a prolonged standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies on March 30.
According to Illinois State Police, La Salle and Peru police officers responded to the 600 block of Chartres Street around 1:30 p.m. after reports of a suicidal man with a gun. The subject, identified as Daniel W. Curtin Sr. of La Salle, repeatedly exited his residence with a handgun, at one point firing into the air and later out of a window toward officers.
The La Salle County Sheriff’s Tactical Response Team spent over 90 minutes trying to de-escalate the situation. Around 4 p.m., Curtin came out of the building and pointed a handgun at officers, prompting an officer to fire. First aid was administered at the scene, but Curtin was pronounced dead.
No officers or nearby residents were hurt. The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 is leading the investigation into the shooting.
