Flint police investigate viral video of officer spraying crowd during downtown arrest

FLINT, Mich. – A video circulating on social media has prompted an internal investigation by the Flint Police Department after it showed an officer deploying some form of spray on a crowd during an early morning arrest in downtown Flint.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday on Saginaw Street. Video sent to ABC12 shows a group of people gathered near a trailer barbecue setup. As one man was being placed under arrest, another individual appeared to place his hands on one of the officers. The officer quickly turned and shoved the man before returning to the arrest.

After placing the suspect in a patrol car, the same officer returned and sprayed a substance—believed to be pepper spray or a similar deterrent—toward the group, prompting concern and confusion.

The video does not clarify what led to the initial police response or the man’s arrest.

In response, the Flint Police Department issued a statement saying, “The department is actively conducting a thorough internal review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability throughout this process.”

Flint Police Chief Terrance Green echoed the department’s commitment, stating, “We hold our sworn officers to the highest standards… Our department will thoroughly review this incident to ensure justice, fairness, and public trust.”

Officials say updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
