Four injured following random stabbing attack in California
FRESNO, Calif.- Four people are recovering after a terrifying stabbing spree in Atwater, California, that left the community shaken.
The violent attack, which appeared to be completely random, occurred Wednesday morning and was captured on surveillance footage.
Investigators say the suspect, 38-year-old Isidro Chavez Gonzalez, went on a violent rampage late Wednesday morning, attacking multiple people as they waited at a bus stop along Atwater Boulevard near First and Second Street.
The incident began just after 11 a.m. when police say Gonzalez approached a group of individuals at the bus stop and attacked two men with a sickle.
Most of the victims scattered, but one person who used a walker could not get away.
Authorities say Gonzalez then targeted a woman nearby.
Surveillance video shows the woman walking along the sidewalk when the man in a gray sweatshirt begins following her.
The video captures the chilling moment when he suddenly lunges forward, stabbing her multiple times.
Disoriented and bleeding, the woman tries to escape—crossing the street in search of help—but Gonzalez continues to pursue and stabs her again in the middle of the road.
The assault ends in front of a nearby business, where the woman collapses and is stabbed one final time.
Police say after the brutal attacks, Gonzalez fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle, and stabbed the driver.
A police pursuit followed, ending in a crash a short time later.
All four victims were airlifted by helicopter to area hospitals for emergency care.
Their conditions have not been released.
Residents in the neighborhood say violent incidents like this are rare in Atwater, and the sudden surge of brutality has left residents shaken.
Gonzalez now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, vehicle theft, and evading police.
