NEW YORK — Four people were killed and another seriously injured after a gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening.
The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, later took his own life on the 33rd floor of the building at 345 Park Ave.
Authorities say Tamura exited a double-parked BMW carrying a rifle and entered the lobby around 7 p.m.He immediately shot and killed 36-year-old off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working a private security job. He then fatally shot Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner and a security guard before wounding a fourth victim, an NFL employee, who is expected to survive.

After calling an elevator and allowing a woman to exit, Tamura took the lift to the 33rd floor, where he fired more rounds, killing another person before fatally shooting himself.

A note found on Tamura suggested he blamed the NFL for a brain injury, referencing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Mayor Eric Adams said the shooter appeared to preserve his brain for research by shooting himself in the chest.

Tamura reportedly had a history of mental health issues. Multiple firearms and ammunition were recovered from his vehicle. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed the injured employee is being treated and advised staff to work from home as investigations continue.
