Steven Kissack, 35, a Juneau resident experiencing homelessness who was frequently seen downtown with his dog Juno, was shot and sustained critical injuries Monday afternoon during a confrontation with police involving a knife.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Front Street, one of the areas Kissack is often seen. Juneau Police Chief Derek Bos, in an interview at the scene, said specific details about how the incident started and Kissack’s condition are still being determined.
“As things escalated Steve came at one of the officers with a knife and that was when they engaged him,” Bos said. “It was a very unfortunate incident.”
Kissack was receiving CPR as he was transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital.
