Hostage taker fatally shot by police after standoff in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Anchorage Police have released body-camera footage involved in February’s officer-involved shooting just one day after police were cleared by the Office of Special Prosecutions.

Anchorage Police Officers Jordan Varak and Tomas Franjul were cleared in their use of lethal force against 41-year-old Puipuia Lipoi Alaelua on Feb. 21 at the Hampton Inn hotel in Anchorage on Credit Union Drive.

Video released by APD on Friday shows the moment police first encounter Alaelua in a hotel room on the second floor. It’s at this point that Alaelua takes a woman and her four children hostage inside the room before slamming the door shut on the officers.

Roughly an hour later, a gunshot is heard from inside the room. Upon inspection, officers discovered Alaelua fired a single shot through the door after barricading himself inside.

Four hours later video shows the moment police are finally able to gain entry into the room where they find Alaelua on the ground using the woman hostage as a shield while pointing the gun at her.

That’s when Varak and Franjul open fire, killing Alaelua on the scene. The video then shows officers safely escorting the five hostages — at least one woman and several children — from the room.

The OSP review said the vehicle Alaelua had recently eluded police, which is what led officers to the hotel after seeing a “suspicious” vehicle in the parking lot.

According to an APD spokesperson, the two officers involved were placed on four days administrative leave as per the department’s policy. Outside of this policy, APD said it does not disclose the status of employees, including whether they are on administrative leave or not. However, they did confirm that both officers are still employed by the department.
