Innocent driver injured after street racing prompts crash in Vacaville

VACAVILLE, Calif. —Two drivers who were street racing caused a crash in Vacaville on Monday night, sending one uninvolved driver to the hospital, the police department said.

Vacaville police said just after 8 p.m., two vehicles were on Peabody Road near Cliffside Drive when a black Mustang and silver Corvette “came barreling” down the off-ramp from Interstate 80.

Officials said the driver of the Mustang lost control and collided with both vehicles, “sending glass and plastic flying and causing significant damage.”

Vacaville police said one of the victims was taken to an area hospital. Officials have not shared the extent of their injuries.

Officials also noted that some community members stopped to help the victims after the crash. “Your compassion is just one more reason Vacaville remains a strong, caring place to live,” the police department shared in its news release.

Investigators determined the Mustang and Corvette had also been racing each other on eastbound I-80 just before the crash, officials said.

The 22-year-old man who was driving the Mustang was arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail on charges related to reckless driving and street racing. He has not been identified.

That driver’s Mustang was also impounded for 30 days.

Vacaville police said investigators are still following up on information about the Corvette involved.

“We take this type of driving extremely seriously because of the danger it poses to pedestrians, bicyclists, and uninvolved motorists,” Lt. Chris Lechuga with the Vacaville Police Department said. “The driver of the Mustang is very lucky that this collision didn’t result in greater injuries or a loss of life. That kind of driving has no place on our city streets, in our community or any other, and they will be subject to enforcement and their vehicle impounded if they’re found.”

He said street racing is becoming more common in Vacaville–with the department getting complaints about it on a weekly basis.

If you see someone driving recklessly, Lechuga said to give the department a call.

“The more information we can get from witnesses, the better: vehicle description and direction of travel, description of the driver and of course, the license plates,” he said. “We do take these complaints seriously and we will follow up on each and every one.”
