Kansas City police officer now recovering after hit, run over by ATV
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —An officer with the Kansas City Police Department is now recovering after a driver hit him with an all-terrain vehicle Saturday night.
Officers were called to East Truman Road and South Main Street before 7 p.m. They found an officer who had been hit.
Detectives say the driver of an ATV tried to avoid a deflation device the officer set up. The driver completed a stunt called a “wheelie” and hit the officer, causing him to fall.
The ATV driver left the scene after driving over the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital with serious head injuries. He has since been released. KCPD says he’s expected to make a full recovery.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas posted about the incident on social media.
“Last night, a reckless ATV driver caused injuries to a Kansas City police officer, mayhem on our streets, and continued to display the lawlessness that too many dirt bike, stunt drivers, ATV users, racers, and others display on streets in dense areas of our city,” Lucas said. We expect our officer to recover and pray he can return to normal service soon.”
Lucas and Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves are expected to hold a media briefing at 8:30 a.m. about the incident.
Police have not provided a description of the ATV driver.
