A young municipal worker was abducted, executed and dismembered in northern Peru — and is now being held for ransom even after his death.

Luis Anticona Gutiérrez, 23, worked in public sanitation for the District Municipality of Víctor Larco Herrera in Trujillo.

His mother told local reporters that on September 6 he received a phone call from a woman offering to pay for a taxi to pick him up. He never came home.

Two days later, on September 8, the family received images showing Anticona had been killed. His mother says the same people who abducted him are now demanding S/20,000 (about $5,200) to hand over his remains.

“They already killed him. We just want his body so we can bury him,” she said.

Local police have opened an investigation but so far have not identified suspects or made arrests. The case has shaken Trujillo, where residents say violent crime and extortion have been on the rise.
