FOUNTAIN, Fla. — One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning in Bay County, Florida.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received multiple calls about a man walking along Webber Street with a magazine-fed shotgun and acting erratically near Highway 231. Around 8:30 a.m., a deputy made contact with the individual in Fountain. Officials say the man opened fire on the deputy, who then returned fire and struck him.
Deputies immediately rendered aid before EMS transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators say the man had an encounter with deputies the night before and had shown signs of mental distress. Neither the suspect’s name nor the deputy’s name have been released.
Per policy, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting.
