HOUSTON — Police are investigating a deadly auto-pedestrian crash that occurred late Monday night on the East Freeway, according to the Houston Police Department.
According to investigators, witnesses reported seeing a man being chased by a group of men on foot near the service road before he ran onto the freeway. This happened just before 11 p.m. near the Lockwood Drive exit.
Police said the man was hit by multiple vehicles and killed. I-10 was shut down for several hours but has since reopened.
Police have identified two of the primary vehicles involved in the collision but are seeking additional drivers who may have been involved. Investigators are also working to review surveillance footage from the area to identify the individuals seen chasing the man before the incident.
“I don’t know what was going on with these gentlemen. I don’t know if they were trying to stop him from going on the freeway or the cause of going on to the freeway,” HPD Sgt. Rose said. “Regardless, he was struck multiple times by multiple vehicles and he is now deceased.”
The victim has not been identified. Police found personal belongings on him but have not confirmed whether the name listed on the items matches his identity.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation.
