Man killed during attempted arrest in south St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – A man was killed during an attempted arrest in south St. Louis County Friday morning.

Tracy Panus with the St. Louis County Police Department said two uniformed officers went to a residence on Hawkins Bend Drive to arrest a man wanted for first-degree harassment. Panus said there was a struggle inside the residence between the man and the officers, and at one point, the man pulled out a gun, which was recovered by authorities.

The man was identified Saturday as Aleksandr Lanis, 38, of the 1000 block of Hawkins Bend Drive in Fenton, Missouri.

“They did what they had to do to resolve the incident. Our officers are okay, one sustained a minor injury,” said St. Louis County Police Chief Kenneth Gregory.

Both officers fired shots at Lanis, who later died at the scene. One officer was injured in the incident, but it was not a gunshot injury.

It’s unclear how many shots were fired.

“When I did pass, really no eye contact was ever made much, so I really didn’t know much about him,” said Angie Boaz.

Other neighbors added that the man was a doctor and going through a divorce.

A county records search indicates Lanis owned the home and was a doctor in the Mercy hospital system.

When asked if an Aleksandr Lanis worked for Mercy, a media relations representative said, “He’s no longer an employee at Mercy.”

Police said the officers involved in the shooting are 30 years old with seven years of law enforcement experience and 22 years old with one year of law enforcement experience.

The scene was near the border between St. Louis County and Jefferson County. It was not immediately known if anyone else was in the residence at the time of the shooting.

The family of Lanis’ wife later released the following statement:

“On March 21, our lives changed forever. We are grieving this loss not only ourselves, but for Aleks’s family as well. This was not the outcome we ever wanted in what was a very challenging situation. We also want to thank all of the first responders involved for their courage and professionalism. We are asking for privacy as we search for the words and strength to help a 4-year-old boy understand what happened to his father as we continue to process this as well.”
