Man shot and killed after throwing rocks at Salt Lake City police officers: body cam
Police in Salt Lake City released body camera footage from a shooting that left 47-year-old Jose Hernandez dead after he threw rocks at officers during a confrontation on October 29.
Officers were responding to 911 calls about a fight near 2100 South and 300 West. Witnesses told police a man had been involved in a street altercation. When officers arrived, they found Hernandez sitting on a curb.
Bodycam video shows officers offering medical help, which Hernandez declined. As they questioned him, Hernandez began picking up rocks from nearby landscaping and putting them in his pockets. Officers repeatedly told him to stop and put the rocks down.
Hernandez stood up and began walking away. Officers drew their weapons and followed, ordering him to drop what he was holding. Hernandez ran across traffic, then turned and threw a rock at one of the officers. The officer fired his gun, hitting Hernandez.
Hernandez was taken to the hospital, where he died. One officer was also treated for a minor injury. The West Jordan Police Department is handling the investigation.
