Man shot dead by police after attacking officer in Fairfax County

A man is dead after he was shot by police in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, according to new video and reports.

Police shot the man in the McDonald’s parking lot in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway just after 4pm on Thursday.

An officer investigating a stolen U-Haul at a gas station was attacked by the driver of the U-Haul, who pushed the officer into the driver’s seat of his cruiser and assaulting him from on top of him, authorities said.

According to police, the officer who was being attacked radioed that he was being attacked and that his attacker was carrying a pistol.

The cruiser swerved into reverse during the tussle and spun out of control into the McDonald’s parking lot next door.

A police officer with 24 years of service responded and took the suspect off the officer before shooting him, according to the police.

“Officers discharged their firearms during the struggle. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene,” police said in a press release.

According to officials, another responding cop also discharged their weapon. The officer under attack did not fire his weapon.

The identity of the man has not been disclosed at this time.

The injured cop was transported to a nearby hospital.

Internal affairs is investigating the shooting.
