NEW YORK — A man was shot dead and pistol-whipped inside a bodega in Poughkeepsie early Saturday morning.
The incident took place in Dutchess County in the City of Poughkeepsie, at around 4:30am, on Saturday, June 18, at the Casablanca Grocery located at 386 Main St.
Responding officers found Atiba Proverbs, 27, shot multiple times, according to Det. Lt. Matt Clark of the city of Poughkeepsie Police.
Carlton Belton, 31, was arrested Sunday and charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Atiba Proverbs.
Belton arrived at a hospital a short time later with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, police said, and a third man, a 40-year-old city resident was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Police did not say who shot Belton and who shot the third man. They said witnesses at the scene have not been cooperative with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 845-451-7577.
