MIAMI – Authorities released surveillance video showing the moments a fight broke out between two passengers riding a trolley led to a stabbing that left one of the riders dead.
According to City of Miami Police, the fight occurred near Northeast 29th Street and Biscayne Boulevard, at around 2:40 p.m. on Feb. 4.
“Two gentlemen got into an argument inside the trolley,” said Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz.
The security footage shows one passenger, identified as 46-year-old Lamont Collins, arguing with the driver. At one point, Collins, who, police said, is homeless, is seen brandishing a knife before putting it away.
Detectives said Collins was about to exit the trolley when another passenger, 49-year-old Adolf Bailey Bruce, walked up to leave as well, when Collins, whose back is toward the camera, for some reason yelled at Bruce to back off.
The driver tried to de-escalate the situation, but police said, the two men started arguing. Seconds later, the dispute became a physical altercation.
Collins and Bruce fell onto the trolley seats when, detectives said, Collins pulled the knife back out and stabbed Bruce several times.
Several passengers are seen running out of the trolley as the fight unfolds, while others rush toward the back in an attempt to stay out of harm’s way.
Witness Ricardo Sanchez said he saw Bruce collapse outside the trolley.
“I see everything, the commotion. The guy is just on the floor — this is before the police — I was able to see the man on the floor,” Sanchez said.
Collins ran out and tried to get away, and it appears he was still carrying the knife.
Miami Police officers shut down several blocks of Biscayne Boulevard as they investigated.
Collins was arrested a short time later.
The suspect appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Feb. 5.
“He stabbed the victim over and over again, resulting in the victim being killed,” she said.
Friends of Bruce, who lovingly called him “Nash,” said he worked at a restaurant nearby and was a loving member of the community.
“He doesn’t have much family or friends. Just ask his co-workers, as his family. He was loved to an extreme amount,” co-worker Matteo Eraso told Glazer in court.
Collins is charged with second-degree murder with a weapon. He remains behind bars.
