Man who opened fire on roadway shot by LAPD officers: body cam

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Police Department has released the names of the two officers involved in a June 28 officer-involved shooting in the Newton Division.

Police identified them as Officer III Ferdy Cordero and Officer II Andrew Villalta.

According to LAPD, the incident happened around 10:50 p.m. near Avalon Boulevard and 42nd Place. Officers from the Newton Gang Enforcement Detail saw a man, later identified as 35-year-old Ismael Hernandez, walking in the roadway with a handgun.

As officers approached, police say Hernandez raised the gun and fired two rounds, prompting the officers to return fire. Hernandez was struck, and officers provided aid until Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived. He was taken to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Investigators determined Hernandez had threatened another man and fired a gun at him before the shooting with police. That victim was treated for a minor injury at the scene.

A Rossi .38 Special revolver with five spent casings was recovered. No officers or bystanders were injured.

The LAPD Force Investigation Division is continuing its investigation.
