Memphis Police investigating after body found near an MLGW substation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Police (MPD) are investigating after a body was found near an MLGW substation near the corner of Shelby Drive and Mendenhall. It was discovered just before noon.
A utility worker who asked not to be identified by name said he came across the body while preparing to install fiber optic cable in a small wooded area near the substation.
He said he initially thought he had discovered a pile of clothes, then saw a hand sticking out of a jacket sleeve.
“As I got closer, I saw fingers,” he said. “That’s when I made the call.”
Squad cars surrounded the site. Plainclothes officers climbed in and out of a ditch where the body was found. It was eventually carried out of the woods on a gurney and loaded into a van.
“It was disturbing,” the utility worker said. “I almost threw up a couple of times.”
The utility worker took videos of the body in hopes of identifying the remains.
The videos show a decomposed body in a gray hoodie, black pants and black sneakers.
“Some people have said that it might be their relative based on the clothing,” the utility worker said.
The videos show a cell phone and duffel bag on the ground next to the body, which is missing its head.
The utility worker said he is hopeful the remains will be identified soon and bring closure to the person’s family. The shocking discovery will stay with him for a long time.
“It’s crazy that somebody passed. You know, that’s one thing,” he said. “But to find a body without a head? That’s even crazier.”
MPD has not yet publicly identified the body. A cause of death has also not been announced.
