Memphis repo-man run over by driver trying to escape tow truck

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis repo-man was in the hospital Wednesday after being run over by a driver trying to escape the tow truck, the Memphis Police Department said.

Just before 8:00 Wednesday morning, MPD said, officers were sent to the University Gardens Manor apartments in Hyde Park for an aggravated assault call. Once there, officers said they found a man who’d been run over by a car while in the middle of trying to repossess it.

Police said the man told them he had been under the car, a red 2011 Ford Focus, when he heard a man and woman come up to the car. MPD said he’d told them he’d heard the woman tell the man to “Hurry up!”

The man then got into the car, MPD said, and backed up over the repo-man’s head and arm before driving off. Police said the repo-man had abrasions on his head, a large black mark on the front of his sweatshirt, complained of arm pain, and had to be shaken to be kept conscious. The repo-man was taken to Regional One for treatment.

Police said they spoke to a witness on the scene who told them she knew the woman involved, and that she’d sold the suspect the car, for which he wasn’t making payments. MPD said she’d put the car up for repossession and contacted the repo-man to come pick it up. Police said she also provided them the VIN on the car.
