Motorcyclist critically wounded after pulling gun on deputy in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Calif. — Authorities have released bodycam footage from a July 29 officer-involved shooting in Beaumont that left a man in critical condition.

Just after 6:30 p.m., a Riverside County Sheriff’s K9 Unit deputy stopped a male motorcyclist near Redlands Boulevard and San Timoteo Canyon Road in the unincorporated area of Beaumont. Investigators say the deputy asked the man if he had any weapons, but he became uncooperative and ran toward a nearby home.

The deputy pursued, ordering the suspect to stop and put his hands up. According to officials, the man — now identified as Justin Perry James — pulled out a gun, prompting the deputy to fire. The suspect was struck and deputies immediately provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

James remains hospitalized in critical condition. No deputies were injured.

The involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. The Sheriff’s Department says an investigation is ongoing
