New video shows Phoenix police fatally shooting man who pulled knife during arrest

PHOENIX — Police have released new bodycam video from a deadly officer-involved shooting that took place on August 31 near 20th Street and Southern Avenue.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, two patrol officers stopped a man riding a bicycle without a headlight late at night. The man briefly tried to get away, then stopped and stood next to his bike as officers approached. Moments later, he ran again.

Officers caught up and tried to detain him, but he resisted. During the struggle, one officer saw the man pull out a knife and shouted a warning to his partner. As the officers stepped back, one drew his gun and fired.

Police said the man was given medical aid at the scene before being taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. No officers were hurt.

The officer involved works in the South Mountain Precinct and has been with the department for just over two years.

The case is under criminal review by the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, as well as an internal investigation by Phoenix Police.
