DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. – The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the man shot to death following a standoff with Dorchester County deputies on Friday.
Robert S. Rose, 35, was pronounced dead at Trident Medical Center at 4:24 p.m., Coroner Paul Brouthers said.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
North Charleston Police responded to a call at the 400 block of Waverly Park Lane to assist the deputies with a critical situation involving a barricaded suspect. SWAT also responded to the scene.
North Charleston Police spokesman Harve Jacobs said the situation escalated when the suspect, identified as Rose, exited the home through a window and approached with a hatchet in each hand.
Police say he then used the hatchet and assaulted one of the deputies, which eventually led to a barricaded suspect incident.
The deputy was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital, according to Dorchester County Sheriff’s spokesman Steven Wright.
Deputies say officers made clear and repeated commands to Rose, but he did not comply, which led to officers firing their weapons and striking the suspect.
Officers immediately provided medical assistance and EMS rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Sam Richardson thanked law enforcement for their assistance and response to the incident.
“We want to thank all our law enforcement partners from the federal, state, and local levels the North Charleston Fire Department, Dorchester County EMS the Department of Mental Health, and the Dorchester County Emergency Management Division for their swift and collaborative response to this incident,’ he said.
Rose’s body will undergo an autopsy on Monday morning, Brouthers said.
