NYPD officers shoot 62-year-old gunman to death at East Harlem NYCHA complex

Two NYPD cops shot a 62-year-old gunman to death during a confrontation at an East Harlem public housing development early Sunday, police said.

Officers responded to 911 calls for a man with a gun on the grounds of the Washington Houses near Third Ave. and 103rd St. about 12:30 a.m.

The NYPD’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system had also been activated in the area, NYPD Housing Chief Martine Materasso told reporters

Cops from the NYPD’s Police Service Area 5, which covers the housing complex, gave “numerous commands verbally to drop the gun,” but the gunman didn’t comply and two officers opened fire, striking him, Materasso said.

The officers performed CPR on the man before medics took him to Harlem Hospital, but he couldn’t be saved.
