Off-duty Colonie officer hits and kills pedestrian: video

Colonie, NY – Security footage released by the New York Attorney General’s Office shows the moment an off-duty police officer fatally struck a pedestrian in Albany County.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, on Old Loudon Road in Colonie. The video shows off-duty Colonie Police Officer Jason Tusch driving when he struck 65-year-old John Bonds, who was pushing a cart near Purtell Avenue. The impact launched Bonds into the air, and he later died from his injuries on Monday, June 2.

Officer Tusch remained at the scene and attempted to render aid, according to authorities. He has since been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol following critical incidents.

The Colonie Police Department recused itself from the investigation. New York State Police are now handling the case, while the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation continues its review.

Officials emphasized that the video release is part of transparency efforts and does not indicate whether criminal charges will be filed.
