Oklahoma City police have released dramatic body-worn camera and drone footage showing the moments before an officer fatally shot Jose Martinez, a suspect accused of raping two individuals — including a minor — earlier this month.
The incident occurred on June 4, when officers arrived at a home to arrest Martinez. The video shows Martinez attempting to flee naked through the back door of the residence while holding a firearm.
Police said Martinez tried climbing a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire, tossed his gun, but then picked it up again after landing. In the footage, officers order him to the ground multiple times.
“Get on the ground! Turn around!” one officer yells. Martinez replies, “No, you gotta kill me!” before the officer opens fire. Martinez is seen holding the gun at the time he was shot.
After the shooting, the officer can be heard reporting, “Shots fired. Suspect down.”
Martinez died at the scene. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure pending the outcome of the investigation.
