PATH train fire sends 9 to hospital

NEW YORK — A fire erupted beneath a PATH train early Monday morning, forcing the evacuation of passengers and disrupting service between New York City and New Jersey for several hours.

The incident occurred just before 6:20 a.m. at Newport Station, where video footage showed flames and heavy smoke engulfing parts of the train. Passengers could be heard yelling “open the door” and urging caution as they disembarked onto the platform.

Port Authority officials confirmed that 13 individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, with 9 transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

The fire brought PATH service to a halt between Hoboken and both the World Trade Center and 33rd Street, as well as between Journal Square and 33rd Street. Thousands of morning commuters were turned away from stations during the suspension, which lasted until around 11 a.m.

Despite the severity of the fire, officials said there was no visible damage on the platform once service resumed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
